Why We Give
Our motives in giving are everything to God. From the beginning of the Bible, with the account of Cain and Abel’s giving with different attitudes (“some” versus “first”), God sees into our hearts in how we give.
The Old Testament instructed those who trusted the Lord to tithe – give 10% in response to how they experienced God blessing them. Giving is seen as an important part of our worshiping relationship with God (gratitude), and of our awareness of the needs of others we are in relationship with (love)
In Malachi, God challenges us to test Him – to test His faithfulness in providing – by tithing. The tithe is not about obeying a rule about giving, but growing our relationship of trusting God in every aspect of our life.
There are several Scriptures from the New Testament that help us in developing healthy habits in giving. We should give regularly (1 Corinthians 16:2), humbly – not to impress others (Matthew 6:3-4), in proportion to what God has given us (2 Corinthians 8:11-13), generously (Romans 12:8 & 2 Corinthians 9:6), and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7-8).
God is more concerned that in response to His amazing love that we have first given “ourselves” to Him than He is with the money we might give to Him (Romans 12:1 & 2 Corinthians 8: 1-5).
